I purchased my AE AdvancedFrame Convertible inflatable kayak last September, and I have been very pleased with it. I've taken it to about 20 different locations throughout Colorado, and it has performed exceptionally well.
The kayak comes in a heavy-duty duffel bag which takes up about one third of the trunk of my Pathfinder. While the loaded bag is somewhat heavy (around 60lbs, I believe) the inflatable nature of this boat makes it much easier to transport and handle than a classic plastic or fiberglass boat (and there is no need for an expensive roof rack). I also use a plastic storage box for the miscellaneous kayak stuff - PFD, paddles, pump, etc.
Getting the kayak ready for the water is a breeze: typically, I am paddling about 15 minutes after I arrive at my location. The double action hand pump inflates the kayak quickly. At 6'2'', inflating the boat would be a little bit easier for me if the pump were a little taller too, but that's a minor detail. I also use the optional Backbone - a sectional rigid bar that runs along the bottom of the boat to improve its performance.
I've launched this kayak from sandy beaches, rocky lakeshores and boat ramps. Entering and exiting the boat is easy in all of these environments. The boat tracks exceptionally well, especially considering is consist mainly of soft plastic tubes and fabric. Even in high winds, I've always managed to keep a steady course. The boat feels very stable and slices through waves. I have always felt 100% in control while in this kayak, and it certainly withstands comparisons to the rigid kayaks I have used in the past.
I typically go solo on my kayak adventures, and the AE kayak provides plenty of storage space for gear for multiple nights in the backcountry. In addition, the kayak comes with an extra seat, and performs equally well with two paddlers. I even went as far as taking my entire family in the kayak (two adults, a four year old girl and a one year old girl), and even that worked!
I have certainly enjoyed this boat so far, and I plan on making it part of many a Colorado summer adventure. You'll see it in action in some of my blog entries soon!
