With temperatures near 80 degrees today in the Denver area, it was time to take the kayak for a spin on Chatfield Reservoir. While this reservoir becomes insanely busy with motorized boats during summer weekends, during an early-season weekday like today, traffic is typically limited to a handful of fishing boats.
I parked at the southwest end of the reservoir, at the Fox Run trailhead. The water here is shallow, and the sandy beach is a great launch site. While the weather was great, the wind did pick up quite a bit later on. As I got into deeper water, some waves started getting a little bigger, I even saw the occasional white top appear. Even in these fairly strong winds, my Advanced Elements kayak tracked surprisingly well. I even managed to catch up with another paddler in a hardshell without too much effort. The bad reputation inflatable kayaks continue to receive are once again disproved by actual experience in the AE AdvancedFrame Convertible.
I wouldn't call Chatfield Reservoir a great spot for paddling, but it does have some attractive features. As I mentioned before, during summer weekends the reservoir hosts numerous Coors Light drinking fishermen in boats that can easily shred my inflatable kayak and its captain to pieces. This environment can quickly become intimidating, and during those weekends, I would much rather seek the solitude of a more remote destination.
That being said, the reservoir is conveniently close to Denver, and is perfect for a quick workout. Especially early morning outings can provide the paddler with a sense of solitude. The park is also a true bird haven. Expect to get really close to pelicans, herons, and several species of waterfowl. Last year, I even spotted a bald eagle soaring high above the water.
As you paddle northeast towards the dam, the view is not great. The dam actually blocks the view and all you see is its concrete mass. The view becomes much better as you head back - the foothills of the Front Range are right in front of you, and you can see Roxborough State Park.
